Claude 5: Fable and Mythos arrive, and the most powerful version stays restricted

Inteligencia Artificial

Anthropic introduced Claude 5, a new generation of models that adds a tier called Mythos, positioned above Claude Opus in capability. The detail generating the most conversation in the industry isn't the power itself, but how access is distributed.

Two sides of the same model

Fable 5 and Mythos 5 share the same base model, but they're distributed differently. Fable 5 is the most capable generally available model and includes additional safety measures for dual-use capabilities. Mythos 5 offers that same potential without those measures and, precisely for that reason, its access is restricted solely to approved organisations.

Why the most powerful version is restricted

The logic is risk management: the more capable a model is, the greater its potential for misuse. Limiting the unrestricted variant to an approved group is Anthropic's way of putting the highest frontier only in hands that can take on that responsibility, while everyone else accesses a version with safeguards.

What it means for your company

  • For the vast majority of business cases, Fable 5 is more than enough and it's the ceiling you'll have access to.
  • The unrestricted frontier is no longer a commodity: maximum capability is now governed, not just purchased.
  • Competitive advantage lies less and less in "having the biggest model" and more in how you integrate it into your real processes.

At Enigma we work with the most capable models available to build agents and automations on top of your business data. The tool matters; what turns it into results is the integration. You can read the official announcement at anthropic.com/news/claude-fable-5-mythos-5.
